About the station

The station is dedicated to space exploration. The walls fade smoothly from azure to deep blue like Earth's atmosphere, and blue ceramic medallions portray Ulugbek, Gagarin, Tereshkova, Janibekov and others. In 2026 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of «Tashkent Modernist Architecture».

The name

The station is dedicated to human space exploration. Until 1 May 1992 it was called «Kosmonavtlar prospekti» (Cosmonauts Avenue), after which the name was shortened.

Design

The track walls darken smoothly from azure at the floor to deep blue at the ceiling, showing the journey out of Earth's atmosphere. They carry blue ceramic medallions of Ulugbek, Icarus, Gagarin, Tereshkova, Volkov and Janibekov. The round columns are clad in glass, and glowing glass stars on the ceiling form the Milky Way.

History

Architects S. Sutyagin and S. Sokolov designed the station in 1981–1982; it was built in 1982–1984 and opened on 8 December 1984. In 2024 it was added to Uzbekistan's national register of cultural heritage. In July 2026 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of «Tashkent Modernist Architecture».

Fun fact

The station's blue ceramic medallions portray not only cosmonauts — Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova, Vladislav Volkov and Vladimir Dzhanibekov — but also the mythical Icarus and the medieval astronomer Ulugh Beg.
