About the station

Named after the astronomer and ruler Mirzo Ulugbek, grandson of Amir Temur. Interestingly, its decoration followed a design originally prepared for Moscow's Volokolamskaya station. The walls are faced with light Gazgan marble and the columns with brown granite.

The name

The station is named after Mirzo Ulugbek, the astronomer and ruler who was a grandson of Amir Temur. It received this name in 1992; before that it was called «50 Years of the USSR».

Design

This is a shallow column station 8 m below ground with a single island platform 102 m long. The walls of the hall and lobbies are faced with light Gazgan marble, the columns with brown granite, and the floor is laid with grey granite. The tops of the columns once carried metal bands with the emblems of the USSR and its republics — they are gone now.

History

The station opened on 6 November 1977 as part of the first section of the Tashkent Metro. Its decoration followed a design prepared in Moscow for the unfinished Volokolamskaya station. It was renamed in 1992, and the Soviet emblems were later removed from the columns. Two underground lobbies lead to Chalpanota Street and Bunyodkor Avenue.

Fun fact

In the Moscow design the copper plates were meant to echo the domes of the Volokolamsk Kremlin, but in Tashkent they were embossed with the emblems of the Soviet republics.
