About the station

The station originally bore the name of the poet Hamza Hakimzoda Niyoziy, and in 2015 it received the historic name of the area — Novza. The hall and lobbies share a single vault fitted with hexagonal «honeycomb» lamps. Light marble walls are girdled with stalactite-like carving, and there is a panel in Florentine mosaic.

The name

Novza is the historic name of this part of Tashkent. From its opening in 1977 until 2015, the station bore the name of the Uzbek Soviet poet Hamza Hakimzoda Niyoziy.

Design

A shallow single-vault station with a 102 m island platform: the hall and lobbies share one vault. Hexagonal «honeycomb» lamps are set into the vault, forming a glowing pattern. The walls are faced with light marble, with stalactite-like carving running along the track walls. There is also a Florentine mosaic panel on a revolutionary theme by Sh. Abdurashidov and A. Bukharbaev.

History

The station opened on 6 November 1977 in the first section of the metro under the name «Hamza». On 16 June 2015 an order of the Tashkent city administration renamed it «Novza»; the same document turned Habib Abdullaev station into Shahriston. In 2024 the station's escalators were fully replaced.

Fun fact

In the 1971 design the station was listed as «Muqimiy», and one of its exits leads onto Muqimiy Street.
